POSITION SUMMARY: The Medical Director provides clinical direction, support and supervision within many facets of Mercy Care, including the clinic, medication dispensary outreach, and employee health and quality management. This position is responsible for the development, implementation and adherence to clinical protocols through direct supervision of medical and dental staff while working with the clinic administrator. The Medical Director leads and guides the clinical leadership team and regularly provides medical consultation to outreach and clinical staff and provides direct care to clients/patients. The Medical Director ensures quality care and is a resource and guide to the quality improvement manager and provides supervisory support to the quality and medical referrals departments. The Medical Director ensures adherence to laws, regulations and, professional standards pertaining to quality patient care in ambulatory setting, including maintenance of proper documentation where required He/she works with the materials management coordinator in providing direct oversight of the Provider Medication Dispensary, along with medical materials/technology under his/her DEA and GA physician’s license. Also collaborates with in-house pharmacy and leads the Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee. The Medical Director develops collaborative relationships with external health care providers to expand access to care for clients. He/she works with the team and serves as a consultant as needed in grant development, management and compliance insofar as these relate to provision of care. Is a member of the Leadership Team and assists MC President and Vice President Operations in the development and coordination of organizational policies and procedures pertaining to clinical practice.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from a state approved Medical School with a specialty in Family Practice or Internal Medicine. Current state of Georgia licensure as a physician and current DEA number for prescribing medications.

EXPERIENCE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: At least seven years medical experience as a licensed physician. Must have at least three years experience in the supervision of professional staff and/or administrative experience. Familiarity and experience in treating patients with diverse cultural backgrounds, including medically underserved and immigrant populations. Experience in treating the homeless preferred. Participation in on-site supervision of mid-level providers a plus in general practice/primary care. Bilingual an advantage.

JOB KNOWLEDGE: Clinical expertise and competence in providing and overseeing comprehensive direct services and medical consultation is required. Knowledge of effective and efficient clinical operations is required. Knowledge regarding mid-level providers, particularly nurse practitioners, role and scope of practice is required. Familiarity with health problems specific to immigrants, the medically underserved and homeless population preferred. A working knowledge of principles and practices of administration, including planning, organization and financial and personnel reporting practices as required by the state.
