Reporting to the Director of Materials and Engineering Excellence, the Sr. Manager, Engineering Excellence is responsible for leading a central corporate team that develops, implements and coaches all business divisions on engineering best practices. They are the corporate champion for technical training needs, predictive modeling (FEA and CAE), engineering software tools, claim substantiation, and facilitation of technical troubleshooting/auditing on NPD programs. They bring a passion for elevating the way in which the broader engineering organization operates, tools they use, and systemic and process knowledge. The team keeps in mind the interests of Design Engineering, Product Engineering and Packaging Engineering, while simultaneously identifying and instilling new best practices and capabilities into the R&D organization.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
Manages the implementation and ongoing improvement of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and other key tools/processes in the engineering community.
Owns the central strategy for 3D and 2D design tools, as well as implementation of associated best practices.
Leads central simulation / FEA capabilities in support of division innovation projects.
Trains, and leads other trainers, on an overall engineering and process curriculum which includes topics such as: failure mode effect analysis, solid CAD modeling, CAD surfacing, stage gate process, critical thinking, data analysis/statistics, etc…
Facilitates technical project reviews (called “red teams”) for the various divisional R&D teams to identify corrective actions, product design improvements, and optimizations during the product development process.
Actively scouts, vets, and implements new product development techniques, tools, systems, processes, trainings, and collaboration tools to improve and accelerate our R&D capabilities.
Leads the team members who provide claim substantiation and data analysis services to the divisional R&D teams on new product development programs.
Constantly identifies top engineering talent for further development within the Engineering Excellence team.
Bachelor or Master's degree required (Mechanical Engineering preferred)
Minimum of 10 years of product development leadership and project management experience in a stage-gate product development environment
Proven track record of leading successful launches of durable consumer goods (on-time, on-cost, on-budget, on-specification)
Minimum 2 years of managing a team of technical personnel in a product development environment, with demonstrated ability to effectively lead people, mentor and develop employees
Strong problem solving skills with evidence of systematic approach for identifying problems, root-cause analysis, and implementing the “fix”
Demonstrated experience in managing a large number of projects through a team of direct reports in a cross functional environment. Organizational skills, aggressive drive for performance, and extremely high levels of personal accountability are required for success.
Fundamental knowledge of applicable manufacturing processes.
Proven track record of creativity and innovation.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, writing, planning, and presentation skills required for training, influencing, and elevating the broader engineering organization.
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
5+ years of design engineering experience using CAD (Creo preferred)
Working knowledge of FEA
Windchill (PLM) experience is strongly desired
Experience with intellectual property and the patent process
Experience with Consumer Research and translating the voice of the consumer to product solutions
Experience in working in global teams and with Asian suppliers/partners on new product development is strongly encouraged.
